A tour can shape your first impressions of a city and even enrich your experience to a recurring destination, providing a perspective that you could never acquire through all the guidebooks in the world.

I love taking a walking tour when visiting an unfamiliar locale and its often one of the first things I arrange when I touch down. There are few better ways to get a feel for a new city and a sense of bearings to help guide the rest of your stay.

While a good tour can give a first-timer a sufficient overview of a city, a superb tour can teach even a born-and-raised local something new. The latter was my experience with a recent Urban Adventures tour in my hometown of Toronto.

Urban Adventures offers over 450 unique tours in 125 cities run by a team of 800+ local guides, including three tours in Toronto: Kensington Market & Chinatown, Beer Makes History Better, and When Pigs Fly, a culinary ode to the city’s favourite nickname, ‘Hogtown’. We had a gang of Departful contributors in town for the weekend so we opted to explore two of the city’s most diverse and eclectic neighbourhoods, Kensington Market and Chinatown.

Our guide Mike led us on a fun, informative, and at sometimes quirky two hour stroll of the area on a sunny Saturday morning. Not only did he give us a wealth of information about the history, evolution, and defining elements of these two unique neighbourhoods, but he made it entertaining and engaging. And that’s what we’ve come to expect from Urban Adventures – passionate and informative guides, distinctive tours that you can’t find anywhere else, and a sustainable approach to the neighbourhoods and cities they showcase.

While I won’t give you a play-by-play, personal tour highlights include an introduction to Toronto’s street art scene, an overview of the multicultural history and landscape of each neighbourhood, and excellent coconut bagels.
